Transforming my photography, oooh this is exciting.

Photography has a way of changing when you strip it back to its essentials. For me, that transformation began with an old Fuji XE1 camera and a 35mm, manual fixed lens. This simple setup pushed me to rethink how I capture the world around me, focusing on moments that truly matter rather than chasing technical perfection. Alongside this shift, my new Gravel Bike, my Genesis Fugio 20 became more than just a another hobby—it has started to turn into a mate in my creative adventures. Together, they opened new doors to explore landscapes, and the joy of discovery.

Simplifying my photography approach
When I first started photography, I was overwhelmed by gear, settings, and the pressure to capture the perfect shot. Since then I have always tried to find a balance to be happy with my kit and my photography itself.
I have struggled for year with gear acquisition syndrome, and the way I try and shoot.
My photography has put me through some dark days mentally, and the pressure that used to hit me when I had to shoot for others and not myself.
The Fuji XE1 with its 35mm fixed lens will force me to slow down. Without the option to zoom, I will have to move physically closer or farther from my subject, which made me more aware of composition and light. This limitation became a creative strength.
I began to focus on:
Personal enjoyment: Taking photos for myself, not for likes or validation.
Intentional framing: Each shot required thought about what to include or exclude.
Natural light: Relying on available light rather than artificial setups.
Storytelling: Capturing moments that tell a story about the place or feeling.
This approach made photography feel less like a chore and more like a form of meditation. It also freed me from the endless pursuit of new gear, allowing me to appreciate what I already have.
Integrating the Gravel Bike into my photography adventures
The Genesis Fugio 20 gravel bike changed how I explore landscapes. Its versatility lets me ride on paved roads, gravel paths, and rough trails, reaching places that cars can't. This mobility expanded my photographic opportunities and introduced me to wild camping spots I might never have found otherwise, and all this from my front door.
Riding with my camera gear means packing light. I use a my small camera bag as a handlebar bag and it works perfectly. I have enough room for my drone, batteries, filters, a small tripod, as well as snacks (key obviously) add a seat pack and I have enough room for tools to keep me going for miles.
The bike’s sturdy frame handles the extra weight without compromising speed or comfort.
Some benefits I’ve found include:
Access to remote locations: Gravel trails in Dorset and the Isle of Wight offer unique views.
Physical connection to the environment: Riding through changing terrain deepens my appreciation of the landscape.
Flexibility for wild camping: I can carry camping gear and set up in quiet, off-grid spots.
Planning bike packing trips around Dorset and the Isle of Wight
My next goal is to combine both on multi-day trips. Dorset and the Isle of Wight are perfect for this because of their diverse landscapes and cycling-friendly routes.
Dorset highlights
Jurassic Coast: Dramatic cliffs and fossil-rich beaches provide endless inspiration.
Purbeck Hills: Rolling chalk hills with panoramic views.
Wild camping spots: Secluded areas near heathlands and woodlands.
Isle of Wight highlights
Tennyson Down: Sweeping coastal views from high cliffs.
Back of the Wight: Quiet, rugged coastline with fewer visitors.
Forests and downs: Mixed terrain ideal for gravel biking and photography.
I plan to document these trips with my Fuji XE1, capturing the changing light and mood of each location. Wild camping will add an element of adventure, allowing me to shoot sunrise and sunset without rushing.
And i will be filming this on my DJI Drone, and DJI Action so to bring the adventure to you.
Embracing the creative journey
This journey is about more than just photos or bike rides. It’s about reconnecting with the simple joys of exploration and creativity. By focusing on what I love—cycling, and photography—I’ve found a rhythm that feels authentic and fulfilling.
If you’re looking to transform your own photography, consider:
Limiting your gear to encourage creativity.
Using a bike or other active transport to reach new places.
Planning trips that combine your passions for deeper experiences.
Prioritizing enjoyment over perfection in your work.
Photography is a powerful way to see the world differently. When paired with adventure and a willingness to simplify, it becomes a path to personal growth and discovery. My Fuji XE1, 35mm lens, and Genesis Fugio 20 gravel bike are going to create the photography I’ve always wanted. Now, I’m excited to see where the next ride takes me.
Stay Safe,
Matt
